Want to buy sarees? - Gauri Shanker Shiam Sunder

There was a recent occasion when a relative needed to buy a large number of sarees for marriage purposes. As people who would have seen the concept of the Great Indian Marriage would know, when a marriage is planned in Delhi or the neighborhood, there are many functions that are part of the marriage planning. On such occasions, there need to be a number of sarees that are to be presented, upwards of 10. These sarees need to be pretty good, and depending on your economic situation, can prove very costly.
So such a occasion came shortly, and for security reasons, I was deputed to go along with the lady relatives for the purpose of this saree shopping. When you have to buy sarees in quantity, Chandni Chowk is the place that comes to mind. The price is cheaper, and you would be able to save many thousands by the time you are done with all the buying.
Unerringly, my relatives went to this saree shop in Paranthe Wale Gali in Chandni Chowk called 'Gauri Shanker Shiam Sunder' for the bulk of their saree shopping. And then it was mind-boggling to see the number of sarees that could be packed in a shop. In a matter of a couple of hours, we would have seen around a hundred sarees; sarees that were silk, georgette, crepe, embriodered, printed, zari work, and so on. Some of them were heavy, and in all colors. Many of them were extremely elegant and beautiful. Overall, we managed to get a fair amount of shopping done there.
And you also get suits over there in a variety of designs. There is some amount of bargaining that can be done over there, but it all depends on how good a bargain you are capable of driving.

Kylin - an expensive resto-bar in Vasant Vihar

Some old friends were meeting after a long time, some of whom I had not seen in 10 years. We were located all over Delhi, with people staying in Gurgaon, Noida, South Delhi and Central Delhi. Trying to decide a common meeting place is never easy, but we finally agreed to meet at a place called Kylin located in Vasant Vihar, in the same market that Priya cinema is located. (The name Kylin means "mythical Chinese unicorn that is considered lucky")
So I, along with another friend reached there, and after a bit of questioning, we managed to find the location. It is located at one corner of the market, so you have to look. It you stand in front of Priya with your back to the hall, then straight ahead, at the end, you will see a space surrounded by shops on 3 sides. It is on the left side, and there is a big sign at top.
Once we reached there, after climbing one level, we went inside. It sure looks nice, with some nice design, a comforting and relaxes atmosphere, and some English music from way back (normal rock, not harsh). Pretty soon, we were sitting in some comfortable chairs, sipping Martinis (Martini's cost upwards of Rs. 400 per drink, so it can be expensive).
If you are there for a variety of Indian food, perish the thought. You get good Oriental food (at least the type I like). We had some pretty tasty equivalent of honey chilli potatoes, and then ordered food. You get to order dishes, rice with a side dish (oriental was what we ordered). I don't remember the name of the dishes we ordered (after all, we were having some Martini's at the same time). But the food was well received, and the overall level of service seemed pretty fine. You do get a variety of seafood, Teppanyaki section, and other such fare. Good options for vegetarians as well.
What did not work as well was the concept of music volume; as the evening went on, the sound level of the music kept on increasing. Given that this is not a dance place, and most of the patrons come there to enjoy a good session of drinks and dinner, the volume at times made it difficult to hear conversation being made at the other end of the table. One other point which seemed a bit cheap was the use of computer screens (TFT monitors at a few places), since any decent place now uses LCD TV's.
Food is not cheap, since for 4 of us, with drinks and dinner, the overall bill came to approx. Rs. 5400.

Fluid: The lounge bar in Hotel Mosaic in Noida

For a long time, there used to be a Hotel Shipra right at the edge of the road between Sector 18 and the smaller Atta market in Noida. And then Hotel Shipra was torn down to make the trendier Hotel Mosaic. Mosaic has 2 prime locations that draw people on a regular basis, there restaurant Lattitude, and the lounge bar Fluid (in the basement).
The first time I went into Fluid, it was unlike anything that I had ever seen before. The entrance to Fluid was through the side of the hotel (slightly odd), but there was lots of glass giving a good look; and as soon as you enter, you see the whole place covered in white (and these are very plush sofas into which you sink into and can feel comfortable in). And the bar itself has this collection of big bottles including some large sized liquor bottles (and they were really large) that could not fail to impress people.
The lounge bar has 2 floors, with the bottom floor being accessible through a staircase from within the lounge itself, and there is room for dancing and a live band or DJ inside. There are sofas and other plush revolving chairs; the first anyone goes there, they see it is as very different from the other similar places.
Most of my trips have been there along with a large group of colleagues, and for this we get group packages, with unlimited drinks and snacks costing anywhere between Rs. 1000 - 1600, depending on the people. If you go individually, drinks will be in the range of Rs. 250-500 (assuming you don't go in for the more exotic drinks). A variety of Continental, Mediterranean and American food is available, but you will not get typical Indian food such as Mughlai, South Indian or North Indian. Its a nice place to go; but watch out if you are male and it is Wednesday. This is the night for ladies, and an unaccompanied male could have problems.
