Fortune Cookie restaurant in Noida

Just paid a visit to the Fortune Cookie restaurant in Noida. Overall, a nice place. Good ambience, helpful waiters. There were 10 of us, and we were able to fit comfortably in a long table that could have taken 4-5 people more; so they had place for small groups of 3-4 people, as well as large office groups.
Food was good, we had some starters (both veg and non-veg) and then some dishes with rice and noodles. Serves a variety of Chinese food, and pretty tasty. The bamboo rice was particularly good, with the rice being served in a big cylinder made from bamboo. Was a good feeling, and it was pretty good to eat. The dessert were not appreciated by the people who had them.
The restaurant also serves a variety of cocktails and mocktails, and they were good. During lunch time, a lot of people prefer beer, and it was chilled, so they were happy. No happy hours though in the restaurant, making people somewhat happy. Most mocktails were in the range of Rs. 200, with Bacardi Breezer costing Rs. 100.
Located in Sector 18 market of Noida, right next to the McDonalds. Contact details: Phone : 120-2511431
The name of the restaurant derives from the concept of a fortune cookie served right after the food. You eat the food, and when you are done, you are served a cookie that contains your fortune inside it.

Ego Thai restaurant - a great place

Delhi does not have too many good Thai restaurants; what will happen is that in many cases the places that serve so-called Thai food such as Thai red curry have customized the food to meet the local palate, something that happens a lot with Chinese food as well.
However, the Ego Thai restaurant in New Friends Colony promises to serve Thai food as per authentic Thai tastes. It is pretty popular and the food is great tasting. It is located in a nice green sorrounding with a small water fountain.
Location: 53, Community Center, New Friends Colony
Timings: 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm

Akshardham temple in East Delhi

The Akshardham temple complex in Delhi is a magnificent structure, inaugrated in November, 2005. The President, APJ Abdul Kalam attended the inaugration. The complex has been built on the banks of the serene River Yamuna and lies over a sprawling 100 acres of lush manicured lawns adorned with water fountains and carved pavilions. The temple belongs to the Swaminarayan sect, and is open from 9 AM - 9 PM on all days except for Monday when it is closed. It can be very crowded on weekends. It is located at the intersection of the road coming from Nizamuddin Bridge and the road coming from Noida.
If entering the complex, please remember that there is heavy security, and even things such as mobile phones are not allowed. Leave them at home, or deposit them in the safe locker.
Besides the Swaminarayan temple the complex consists of the main monument, exhibition halls, an IMAX theatre and a musical fountain, surrounded by a garden. It also got a restaurant modeled on the Ajanta and Ellora caves and an Ayurvedic bazaar. The entire structure is made without steel as per Sthaapatya shastras of India, and is made from sandstone and marble.
Refer to the URL for the Akshardham temple. Some great photos of the Akshardham temple located at this link. Some additional photos are available at Flickr.
For a first-person read of a visit to the temple complex, read this post at Ghumakkar.com

Vegie India: A restaurant in Ghaziabad

Well, almost Ghaziabad. It is located within 2 km from Anand Vihar ISBT, inside the Galaxie Cinema complex, just off the Dabur chowk. Now Galaxie, besides a movie complex, also has a few eating options. There is Sagar Ratna, there is a caffe, there is an Indian restaurant, and there is this Vegie India. I remember reading, maybe in the menu, that it was a fine dining restaurant.
Well, a fine dining restaurant it certainly was not. The place had the look of a normal restaurant, with families, kids, normal cutlery, normal menu, etc. If I compare it with other fine dining restaurants, it would certainly come much worse off.
If you are going with family and kids, it is a pretty good place; well, I did not like the food much, but there were a number of other people in there who seemed satisfied; maybe my taste buds were expecting some more masala in the food.
The restaurant serves a variety of mockails (apparently, alcohol does not go well if you have a vegetarian restaurant), and in addition, serves Indian and Chinese food. The variety was okay, and the food quantity, while not a lot, was decent. The naan was good. It was not terribly expensive either, with the bill for 2 people coming to Rs. 423, but with taxes, it came to Rs. 485 (a lot of tax). Worth a try, especially if you live in that area.

Nai Sarak: Good place to get all books

Nai Sarak, is located right in the midst of Chandni Chowk, and is pretty famous for people interested in books. A fair amount of students in school, and college would know about Nai Sarak, given that this is the cheapest place in Delhi to buy books, and especially for the medical and engineering books that are pretty expensive, and difficult to find elsewhere. There are specialized shops dealing with all medical books, with engineering books, and many other types.
Once you reach Red Fort, then need to take the road entering Chandni Chowk, and then ask. It is located by taking a left turn after the Paranthewali Gali, and is actually the linking road between Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar. Taking your vehicle inside is not recommended unless you are on a 2-wheeler. Open on all days, except Sundays. It is pretty narrow, lined by double storey buildings, and the lower storeys of these buildings has shops selling books.
Why is it called Nai Sarak? This is mainly because it is a comparatively new and broad road made by the British after the war of 1857. It is pretty busy, with a large number of people frequenting these shops. If you are buying a number of books, say for a college session, this is the place to go. In addition, there are shops specializing in stationery items, as well as papers used in office.

Ansal Plaza in East Delhi: The discount mall

Just spent some time in the Ansal Plaza in East Delhi. This is different from the original Ansal Plaza in South Delhi. This one is a discount mall, offering a number of factory outlets for clothes and shoes.
Where is this located? It is right opposite the Dabur intersection in East Delhi. If you are approaching from Nizamuddin Side, then continue on NH 24 after crossing under the flyover on Noida link road crossing, and then keep on going straight for around 1.5-2 km. At the third red light, take a left turn at the crossing (just before the Fun cinemas) and go straight on this road. After around a kilometer, you will come to a red light where Dabur is to the left and Ansal Plaza (a brightly colored front) is visible to the right. You will have to carry on stright, and then take a U-turn. If you are coming from the Anand Vihar ISBT, then take the road from Anand Vihar ISBT that passes in front of Pacific Mall, and then at the next red light, take a left, and then take a U-turn. The mall should be directly visible.
This mall has a PVR cinema with 3 screens. But the most important point of this mall is the shops. There are a number of retailers over here selling their stuff either as factory outlets or on sale - Some of them being Cantabil, Cotton by Century, Provogue,Vishal Megamart, Reebok, Mega Mart, Allen Solly, Allen Cooper, Bata, Bizarre, Hidesign, Liliput, Van Heusen, VIP, and a few others.
In addition, there is an okay food court with Sagar Ratna, Bercos, places that serve pizza, burders, Dhaba, etc. Not very great because the food court is located to one side. There is chaat and a coffee/pizza shop right in the middle of the mall.
An additional point about the mall is that they sell stuff made by SOS, an NGO, so you will get a variety of artificial jewellery including tops, chains, malas, beads, and so on.
There are places for kids to play games as well, but nothing very bid on the line of a bowling alley.

Delhi Nightlife: Djinns in the Great Hyatt

This is a great nightclub. Even though newer Elevate in Noida is acknowledged as the number one rocking place in the Delhi region, Djinns has its own appeal and charm. You can consider it as a hybrid of pub-disco-restaurant-leisure club. Located in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, at Bhikaji Cama Place in South Delhi, this is easily accessible from South Delhi, West Delhi and Gurgaon. Bhikaji Cama Place is located on Ring Road, in between AIIMS and Moti Bagh.
Contact number is Phone: +91 (0)11 2679 1234
The place looks beautiful, complete with hardwood floors and brass fittings. A band usually plays in the evening. It can get quite crowded in the evening, and on weekends, so you may need to reach early. It is still fairly popular, even with the large number of clubs that have proliferated all over the city.

Classy place: Maamouche in Noida

This is a restobar located a bit away; what that means is that this restobar is located on the 4th and 5th floor of the Center Stage Mall in Noida. It is not easily seen from the bottom of the mall, like Ruby Tuesday and Geoffrey's can be seen; and in fact, is 2 floors above Geoffrey's.
This is an expensive place, and for 2 of us, it cost around Rs. 1500 (drinks for each, starter and a small main course), but the place was nice.
The restaurant is spread over 2 floors, and has a staircase inside, so if you find the place downstairs not to your taste, you can go upstairs. The place has a nice ambience, with not loud music (pretty soothing English music), chairs and tables having enough space between them, sofas for some of the seating, a wide variety of liquor bottles on display, and courteous waiters. However, I still did not leave a tip since they charged a service charge :-).
What else did the place have ? Well, it had a variety of vodka, tequila and rum based cocktails, in addition to pegs of rum, whiskey, vodka, gin, etc. Food quantity was not as plentiful as in other places, but was not so bad either. The naan was excellent.
They serve a variety of North Indian and lebanese food, plus you can get a flavoured hookah.

Delhi Eating: Swagath restaurant in Defence Colony

Swagath restaurant in Defence Colony is run by the same guy (Jayaram Banan) who owns the Sagar chain of stores. But Swagath is very different from the Sagar and Sagar Ratna chain of restaurants; for one, it serves non-vegetarian food as well. Swagath is actually a multi-cuisine restaurant, very highly rated. Some of the varieties of food that you get are South Indian coastal food, North Indian food and Chinese.
Phone Number: 24654537, 24654538
Address: 14, Defence Colony mkt, New delhi- 24
Some of the equisite food items that you get in this restaurant are crab, prawn Koliwada, fish as fresh as you can get, squid. One great item to try is the fried lady fish, eaten with a layered malabari parantha. The appam is another great bread, eaten with a number of meat curries.
You also get alcohol over there, and the combination of beer with a great dish can do wonders for the taste.

Delhi Eating: Ploof, a sea-food restaurant in Lodhi Colony

Delhi is famous for fowl, for umpteen types of chicken dishes, especially Tandoori Chicken. However, there are a number of people who prefer other types of food, and seafood is a good alternative. In addition, sea-food is good from a health point of view; there is less cholesterol, more helpful items such as Omega3 type of amino acids, etc.
The problem in Delhi is to find out where you can get a number of such good dishes, not something very easy. In addition, there is the fear that the fish or other sea-food you get will not be very tasty. Well, here is a good alternative. There is this restaurant called Ploof in the Lodhi Colony Main Market, New Delhi. Where is Lodhi Colony ? Well, it is a place that is in the neighborhood of Safdarjung Tomb, Kotla, Nehru Stadium and Lodhi Garden. If you get to any of these areas, it will be very easy to find Lodhi Colony Main Market.
Contact number for Ploof: +91 (0)11 2464 9026
So what do you get in Ploof ? This is a place with a nice dining room, serene, done up in soothing marine colours. In addition, you get a great seafood menu. Recommended by a number of people, the sea bass spiced with Goan masala is great. In addition, you will get a number of other dishes such as fettucini with tiger prawns, grilled fresh water trout, and sole in oyster sauce.
You can also make your own sandwiches, choosing from an array of fillings, such as tuna, ham, bacon, bell peppers, etc. The dishes are cooked with olive oil instead of the far more fattier oils used in normal Indian restaurants.

Indraprastha Park located next to Sarai Kale Khan

If you are traveling on Ring Road between Ashram and ITO on Ring Road, then it is difficult to miss this park. A green lung for citizens of East Delhi, Central Delhi, and South Delhi, the park is more than 3 kilometers long. To access it, you need to go from Ashram to ITO via Ring Road, and just after the commotion of the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and Nizamuddin Railway Station, starts this green park. It can also be reached from East Delhi by crossing the Nizamuddin Bridge, and is located just at the intersection of NH24 with Ring Road.
It was created by DDA on a site where a landfill existed previously, and you will not find indications that this was a landfill. It now has a variety of swings, amphitheatres and food outlets and is getting more popular with people looking for a green place. The Indraprastha Park was earlier known as the Millenium Park, but was then re-named.

Delhi Eating: Food Court at Spice World, Noida

For people in Noida, this is a good option. Earlier, this food court, located on the 2nd floor of the mall was not crowded, but I had gone there today and it was decently crowded. Which in most cases is an indication that things have improved, and that people actually like the food.
So where is this located ? In Noida Sector 25A (next to Noida Stadium), there are only buildings, both multi-colored. One is a software company called Adobe Systems, the other is Spice Mall. Once you reach Spice Mall, go to the second floor.
What are the options available ? Unlike other food courts, you have only around 5-6 different counters available, with the choice being between a Chinese place, 2 places selling different combinations of Indian, Mughlai, another place selling South Indian food, another place selling different rolls, and another counter selling different types of fast food such as chips, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, etc. I have eaten at all of them, and quantity and quality seem to be fine. In addition, there is also a chaat joint, and a place selling coffee, sandwiches and sweet stuff such as cakes, pastries, etc.

Splash water park on GT Road

In this Delhi heat, what could be better that splashing in a water park ? You have kids getting blasted by the heat, or a group of friends getting together and wanting to have some fun, there is no greater fun than splashing in a water park. And with around between Rs. 200-300 per entry, this is something that is easily doable.
One good option for this is the aptly named 'Splash' water park on Main GT Karnal Road near Alipur. If you want exact map of the place, go to this website and click on the link named 'Location'. For people living in North Delhi or West Delhi, the location is not very far, and even for people living elsewhere, it is a trip that can be planned.
What are the options you get in this water park ? In addition to a wave pool, kiddies pool, water dance, there are slides such as straight slides and curving slides, family slide and cyclone slide. When you are tired and want to glide effortlessly, you can use the lazy river, or have fun under the water fall. In short, you can have great fun, and spend huge amounts of time in the various slides.
There are also non-water games to enjoy, such as sky train, columbus, cup-plate, mini train, revolving tower, and the ever popular bumping cars. There are places to have snacks, eat food, as well as adequate parking. If going in a group, packages incorporating rides along with food are available.

4D Movie at Spice Mall

Spice Mall, located in Noida in Sector 25A, right next to Noida Stadium, contains a good multiplex, along with a Haldiram's and a small food court. It also contains some places that kids love. For one, there is an Amoeba outlet over there, and once you let a kid in there, he / she will have an incredible time playing a lot of the games over there. Also, given that the Amoeba has a concept of giving back some tickets based on game performance that can help in collecting some trinkets, kids get baited into collecting these tickets.
There is yet another outlet there in the Mall that is very attractive to kids, and to a number of adults as well. This is something called a 4D movie. Now, a 3D movie is something that enables people watching it to see something almost real life like. What a 4D movie does is to take this to a next level, where you can feel something. Imagine diving inside the sea, and a fish comes to your face and blows onto you or throws water at you, and you can actually feel air or water on your face. In addition, suppose you are having a bumpy ride, your seat will actually move up or down to give you the same effect. If there are a number of mice running on the ground between your legs, you will feel movement between your legs.
You are given a set of glasses to get the real life effect like 3D, and the rest is inbuilt in coordination between the seats and the movie, but gives a pretty enjoyable movie. However, the handicap is that movies shown here are very short (only around 10 minutes). I guess it would take a large amount of effort to prepare a movie such as this one. The cost for this is Rs. 100 per ticket.

iMax theatre in Delhi

Delhi has its own iMax theater. That is the good news. I have watched a couple of movies over there, such as Space Station. This was the first movie that I watched at an iMax, and the effect was incredible. iMax movies are not too long, being roughly around 45 minutes long, but they can be real fun. A massive screen (it is really big) and wearing special glasses, you can almost see the astronaut hanging in front of you in space, tethered to the International Space Station by a card.
Where is this iMax theater located in Delhi? Well, it is located right at the edge of East Delhi, as one of the screens of the Adlabs screens in the top floor of the Pacific Mall, Kaushambi, right in front of the Anand Vihar ISBT. If you still are not able to figure out directions to Pacific Mall or Anand Vihar ISBT, and are coming from the Nizamuddin Bridge from South Delhi, get onto the Nizamuddin Bridge, cross the Yamuna, go straight, under a flyover, and then travel straight for around 2-3 km until you reach a big red light where you can turn left. Turn left, and then it's the first red light where there is a right turn. This is the Anand Vihar ISBT to your left, and if you turn right, the big building on the left is the Pacific Mall.
Contact number for this iMax theatre is 0120-3012222, and if you are dialling from Delhi, it is 951203012222
If you are desiring to see an iMax movie, it would be good to either check the web site for Adlabs, or call in advance. There are not that many iMax movies, and hence they show regular English movies such as Spiderman3 many times. Now, watching such a movie on this big screen is also a great experience. In addition, I watched Happy Feet (which is not a 3D movie) on this screen, and it was a great experience.

Delhi Shopping: Purchasing some kurtas

I live in East Delhi, and wanted to purchase some kurtas. So off I went to the nearest mall, Pacific Mall (located next to Anand Vihar ISBT) to purchase these kurtas. A shop on the ground floor called Chun Mun seemed to be a good place to look at kurtas, but I was pretty disappointed. The choice was not great, and for Rs. 1800 for a kurta pyjama set, it was not exactly easy on the wallet. Then I remembered some great advice I got about buying kurtas, and headed in the opposite direction.
Slightly crowded, but was a good choice. I am talking about a place called Jagatpuri. How do you reach this place ? When you are on your way from Preet Vihar to Anand Vihar on Vikas Marg, you reach a place with a major red light and where a flyover can be seen perpendicular to your direction. This is called Karkari mod. Take a left over here, and at the second major red light, take a left and you are in Jagatpuri (incidentally, on this road, you will find a number of shops that cater to all aspects of house construction - cement, stone, paint, light fixtures, wood, etc). Once at the red light, take a left and you are now in some sort of clothes market. You will find a wide variety of clothes shops over here, a pretty useful place to go to. I bought some excellent kurtas at one-third the price from a place called Haryana Emporium.

Delhi Eating: Terrace Garden in East Delhi

This is yet another restaurant in East Delhi, located at the corner of Law Apartment and next to the petrol pump located next to Karkardooma market. The restaurant is located in the market complex (the market complex also contains an outlet of Aroma (another restaurant) and Chawla's tandoori junction (where you get a variety of non-vegetarian standard stuff such as kababs, chicken, mutton and fish dishes)), and is on the top floor (6th floor). Technically it is not a terrace garden since the restaurant is a closed restaurant with nothing being open-air, but it still has a decent view.
The restaurant visitors are a mix of bachelors and family people. So when I went with the spouse, there were bachelors sitting there having drinks and food, and by the time I left, all the tables only had families having normal food, so one can certainly call it is a family place. The service is fast, food tastes pretty good and liquor is pretty cheap.
One gets a variety of Indian and Chinese food, and the quantity of a serving is good. I had been to this place before with the spouse, so you can consider that the place has a repeat value. Just don't go expecting a very good decor, it is a pretty functional restaurant that is not very expensive. With a drink each, one starter and 2 dishes, it cost around Rs. 700.
